අ, n. The first letter of the Alphabet. It varies bightly in pronunciation, depending sometimes on the meaning or derivation and sometimes on the consonants with which it is combined. It is (1) the clear, distinct sound obtained by shortening ආ ah; (2) the sound of a in negative or miracle. In initial syllables the sound is generally the first of these; the second arises from the dropping of the voice in the unaccented syllables. It is written only when it is the initial letter of a word, but is pronounced after every consonant to which no other vowel is attached, or where it is not suppressed by the sign ්, as කරනවා, karanavā, the final vowel අ, which is long, alone being written;කරන් karan, the vowel අ after න being suppressed by the sign ්.

අ රූ තල, n. pl. the bodiless realms or planes, viz. the four brahma worlds where the inhabitants are immaterial.

අ රූපාවචර, a. pert. to the immaterial planes or those four brahma worlds; or n. bodiless or immaterial plane or world, viz. where immaterial beings are or the mind alone exists.

අ විචිය, n. (අ priv., වීචිය intermission), name of the lowest hell, where there is no intermission of suffering.

අකුරු මඩුව, n. shed where the alphabet or reading is taught, school, ඉස්කෝලය.

අනධ යෂ්ටිය, n. blind man's stick or rod (where by to guide him).

අමු සොහොන, n. place where bodies are burnt or cast unburied.

අල කන්ද, n. tuber ridge or yam bank, viz. ridge where yams are growing.

අෂ්ට දුෂ්ට ක්ෂණ, n. pl. the eight evil moments or occasions, viz. to be born 1 in hell, 2 as an animal, 3 as a goblin, 4 in the two Brahma worlds where neither body nor mind exists, 5 in outer or distant countries where Buddhism is not, 6 with the five senses perverted or confused, 7 as a pagan, 8 in a Buddhaless age.

ආකාසානන්දචායතනය, n. (ආයතන) the first Brahma world, where the inhabitants live twenty thousand kalpas in an incorporeal state.

ආකිචඤඤායතනය, n. the third Brahma world, where the inhabitants live sixty thousand kalpas in an incorporeal state.

ආභස්සරය, n. Brahma world where life endures eight kalpas.

ආමක සුසානය, n. corpse-ground, where corpses are cast unburied, අමු සොහොන.

ඉසි පතන, n. (ඉසි for සෘෂි), Rishis' descent, viz. the grove in Benares where Buddha first preached to his monks, and where Rishis descend from and ascend to the sky.

උපනුපන්, v. adj. pret. (උපන් උපන්): born and born, viz. who or when or where was born (in various births).
