අ, n. The first letter of the Alphabet. It varies bightly in pronunciation, depending sometimes on the meaning or derivation and sometimes on the consonants with which it is combined. It is (1) the clear, distinct sound obtained by shortening ආ ah; (2) the sound of a in negative or miracle. In initial syllables the sound is generally the first of these; the second arises from the dropping of the voice in the unaccented syllables. It is written only when it is the initial letter of a word, but is pronounced after every consonant to which no other vowel is attached, or where it is not suppressed by the sign ්, as කරනවා, karanavā, the final vowel අ, which is long, alone being written;කරන් karan, the vowel අ after න being suppressed by the sign ්.

අධි ගමාන්තර්‍ධාන යුගය, n. (අන්තර්‍ධාන) age when the higher or saintly life has disappeared for want of a manifest Buddha.

අර්‍හත් මාර්‍ගය, n. rahat path: the last and highest of the four paths to Nirvāna, when, all the passions being extinguished, there is no further transmigration, and the rahat attains Nirvāna.

අවා මඟුල, n. marriage feast when the marriage is ආවාහය, which see.

ඇත් මද, n. exudation from the temples &c. of elephants when in rut.

ඇදිලිය, n. the fingers or palms of the hands when joined.

ඉද්දෙනවා, v. i. to tingle or lancinate with pain, to ache (as a boil &c., when touched); pret. ඉද්දුණා.

උප ලක්ෂණය, n. helping or minor indication or characteristic: as a synecdoche when a part is put for the whole or a quality for the substance.

උපනුපන්, v. adj. pret. (උපන් උපන්): born and born, viz. who or when or where was born (in various births).

ඒකාසනික, a. (ආසනික fr. ආසන), B.P.'s occupying always one seat when eating.

ඒකාසනිකාංගය, n. B. P. ordinance relating to the use of only one seat when eating offerings: see තෙළෙස්ධූතාංග.

ඔද්දල්කරනවා, v. t. to hurt, make throb or ache (as a boil when struck).

කංපත්‍රය, n. a saw, කියත; splashing the water about when bathing.

කල්කය, n. viscous sediment deposited by oily substances when ground, kind of medicinal paste; sediment, filth, මණ්ඩි, කිලුට.

කලි යුගය, n. the fourth or iron or sinful age of the world, which began about A. C. 3100 and is to extend to 432,000 years, when the whole world will perish.
