අ, n. The first letter of the Alphabet. It varies bightly in pronunciation, depending sometimes on the meaning or derivation and sometimes on the consonants with which it is combined. It is (1) the clear, distinct sound obtained by shortening ආ ah; (2) the sound of a in negative or miracle. In initial syllables the sound is generally the first of these; the second arises from the dropping of the voice in the unaccented syllables. It is written only when it is the initial letter of a word, but is pronounced after every consonant to which no other vowel is attached, or where it is not suppressed by the sign ්, as කරනවා, karanavā, the final vowel අ, which is long, alone being written;කරන් karan, the vowel අ after න being suppressed by the sign ්.

අ ජීවකයා, n. one who has killed (his passions), viz. naked H. mendicant. whose nakedness is supposed to prove it.

අංජනයා, n. elephant supporting the west corner of the world.

අංජනාවතී, n. female of the elephant which supports the north-east corner of the world.

අග්නි ගර්‍භය, n. lit. fire-womb, viz., crystal, පළිඟු; the sun-stone, supposed to contain solar heat, සූර්‍ය්‍යකාන්තය.

අඩ තබනවා, අඩ තියනවා, v. to place props or supports, to prop, scotch.

අඩි අල්ලනවා, v. to get a footing or base, become fixed or firm, settle; as v. t. to fix anything, fix a prop or support.

අත් වාරුව, n. support of the hands: අත්වාරු වෙන් යනවා, go with the aid of some one's hand.

අතාධාර, a. (අන් ආධාර), unsupported; helpless, destitute; ආධාරනැති, පිහිටනැති.

අතිරේක පත්‍රය, n. supplementary paper, extra document or newspaper, ඌනපූරණය.

අතු බලය, n. prop, support, රුකුල.

අධ්‍යාහරණ, අධ්‍යාහාර, a. (අධි extra, ආභරණ taking), implied, supplemental; as මම, though not expressed, is implied in or supplemental to කෙළෙමි.

අධ්‍යාහරණය, අධ්‍යාහාරය, n. supplementing. supplying (an ellipsis); supplement, complement; ඌනපූරණය.

අනු බලදෙනවා, v. to buttress, support; sustain; encourage, urge on, abet; රුකුල්දෙනවා, උසු ලනවා, පොළඹවනවා.

අනු බලය, n. support, aid, පිහිටාධාරය, reinforcement, අමුතු බලයක් දීම.
