අ, n. The first letter of the Alphabet. It varies bightly in pronunciation, depending sometimes on the meaning or derivation and sometimes on the consonants with which it is combined. It is (1) the clear, distinct sound obtained by shortening ආ ah; (2) the sound of a in negative or miracle. In initial syllables the sound is generally the first of these; the second arises from the dropping of the voice in the unaccented syllables. It is written only when it is the initial letter of a word, but is pronounced after every consonant to which no other vowel is attached, or where it is not suppressed by the sign ්, as කරනවා, karanavā, the final vowel අ, which is long, alone being written;කරන් karan, the vowel අ after න being suppressed by the sign ්.

ඉඳ හිට, ඉඳ හිටලා, ad. occasionally, sometimes.

ඍ, n. The ninth letter of the alphabet: a vowel-consonant the sound of which in Sanscrit = ri, but in Sinhalese it varies from ri to ru, and is sometimes ir.

කදහස, ad. sometime, කිසිකලෙක.

කවදා නුමුත්, ad. at any time whatever, sometime.

තොට·පියලි, n. pl. shreds orbits of cloth beaten off in washing and which are sometimes used as charms and incantations, also clothes left by the bather after his religious ablutions.

දේව·දේවයා, n. god of gods; ap. of Brahma and Siva, also of Buddha as chief of the Rahats who are sometimes called දේවතාවෝ or gods.

න, prefix, with a negative, privative or prohibitive force. Its normal form is නො, as නොකර, but its vowel is varied according to the vowel which follows and sometimes is merely න‍. Thus නාරින for නොඅරින, නෑර, for නොඇර, නේන for නොඑන, නූපන් for නො උපන්, නුදුටු &c., but not නී, as නොඉල්ලා, not නීල්ලා.

නිර්, prefix, expressing negation and sometimes emphasis, also the sense of Out, Forth. The ර් is vocalized by a following vowel, as නිරග්නි for නිර්අග්නි.

පංච·මහා·පුරුෂ·යෝග, n. pl. astrol. five important combinations or positions in which the planets Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus and Saturn are sometimes found.

පංචානන, n. the five-faced or large-faced one: the lion, සිංහයා; ap. of Siva who is sometimes represented as a silver coloured man with five faces.

පිඹුරා, n. rock-snake, python molurus, said sometimes to attain a length of eighteen feet and twenty-seven inches in circumference; pl. පිඹුරෝ.
