අ, n. The first letter of the Alphabet. It varies bightly in pronunciation, depending sometimes on the meaning or derivation and sometimes on the consonants with which it is combined. It is (1) the clear, distinct sound obtained by shortening ආ ah; (2) the sound of a in negative or miracle. In initial syllables the sound is generally the first of these; the second arises from the dropping of the voice in the unaccented syllables. It is written only when it is the initial letter of a word, but is pronounced after every consonant to which no other vowel is attached, or where it is not suppressed by the sign ්, as කරනවා, karanavā, the final vowel අ, which is long, alone being written;කරන් karan, the vowel අ after න being suppressed by the sign ්.

ගෞතම, n. proper name of Buddha and of the race from which he descended; name of a sage or rishi, from whom the lineage of Buddha probably derived their name.

ඤ, n. The tenth consonant of the Sanskrit and Pali alphabets and nasal of the palatal or second class. It is often written by the shorter from [ං], as in ආරංචි, වංචා, by [`], චචා. In Sansorit and its derivatives it never stands as an initial or alone, but joined to the following consonant either in its full or shortened form, as වඤ්වා, වංචා, වචා.

ත·ශබ්දය, ත·සද, n. the vocable ත: grammatical term for the second person singular or plural as derived from තෝ.

තත්සමභාවය, n. gram. sameness, identicalness (of a derived word with the original).

තද්ධිතය, තඬිතය, n. derivative noun.

තද්භව, a. gram. derivative.

තද්භව·වචනය, n. derivative word.

ද්‍රාක්‍ෂා·ජ, a. derived from grapes, uvic, මිදිඵල වලින් අටගත්.

ධ්‍යානය, n. B., meditation, profound contemplation, concentration of the thought and purpose in order to obtain Nirvāna, such an intentness of mind that it is supposed to exclude objects of sense so that they are unperceived or make no impression. Previous page -- 312 -- second, is one of finding or joy (ප්‍රීතිය); the fourth, චතුථි ධ්‍යානය, as the result of the third, is one of sound condition or satisfaction (සුඛය); the fifth, පංචම ධ්‍යානය, as the result of the fourth, is one of perfect mental quietude and repose (ඒකාග්‍රතාව). The following may illustrate the different stages. The first may be compared to thirst; the second, to the seeking of water; the third, to the joy of finding it; the fourth, to the benefit and satisfection derived from drinking it; the fifth, to the quiet repose and rest in the shade after the want has been satisfied.

නිජ, a. not-derived, viz. one's own, ස්වකීය, තමාගේම; eternal, සදාකාල.
